The Nintendo 'Ultra' 64 (February 1996)

The Nintendo 'Ultra' 64, will be amazing. It will dish out better graphics than the Saturn, PlayStation and most expensive PC's. In fact, it will be the equivalent to Silicon Graphics systems, that in turn, cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, making the Ultra 64 the most powerful piece of hardware around that's made purely for playing games.

According to Tom Jermoluk, President and Chief Operating Officer of Silicone Graphics;

And you know what -- we believe him.

The 3D-Stick will enable players to identify any angle in 360-Degrees, as well as control the characters movement speed. This is something many PC gamers are already familiar with, whilst console users will be new to the experience. As the time of a true 64-Bit, real time 3D environments are about to hit our homes, Hiroshi Yamauchi, President of NCL, spoke out over the level of control the Ultra 64 controller will have claiming without it "there may not be a future for video games".

Looking at it from that comment, he has a point. The 3D-Stick of the controller could be used to simulate actions like swinging a golf club, or a baseball bat, as well as steering a car far more precisely compared to the PlayStation or Saturn, which only offer at most, 180-degree control.

The yellow C Buttons will primarily be used to change views whilst direction is handled by the 3D Stick, although other uses of the C Buttons will allow the ability to prompt player routines in football games, with the first game to use this feature being Rare's upcoming Goldeneye, which we assume will allow the player to sort of "strafe" from left to right.

In a similar manner to the PlayStation's memory cards, the Memory Packs for the 64 will store data for games, only these will slot into the port on the back of the controller. The cool thing about storing the units this way, is that they can enable players to customise the controllers individual settings, which will be remembered the next time the game is loaded. However, Nintendo claim that the Memory PAcks can record entire races, fights etc to be viewed at a later date.

The Z Trigger is our favourite new button. In Mario 64, it's used to make the plumber duck and crawl, but it's been reported that the button's main purpose is to simulate the trigger of a gun (we assume Goldeneye will use this function), but the location of the Z trigger is genius, just there, right at the back, waiting for your finger to find it, easily, fluidly, naturally.
