The Apple iPad 2 is officially here, and it's looking pretty sublime. Check out our little update section below, along with the Apple press shots of the official event.
What Do We Know?
The iPad 2 is fast. Very fast. Rocking a Duel-Core 1GHz A5 chip, the thing tears through apps, games, videos, web browsing and more, at blistering speed. (9 times faster than the original iPad to be precise.)
Battery life is (surprisingly) unaltered, with Apple quoting 10 hours of juice.
What's Changed In Design?
Well, there are now two camera's, front and back. The latter shoots 720p video at 30fps, whilst the latter is a VGA camera, also at 30fps (but obviously not HD).
The iPad 2 is 33 percent thinner that it's predecessor, at just 8.8mm, and lighter at a mere 600g.
The back also houses an enlarged speaker grill, whilst the screen resolution remains the same at 1024 x 768 and uses the same IPS LCD screen technology as the iPad 1.
It will also ship in both black and white varients.
How Much?
A 16GB WiFi-only iPad 2 will start at $499, and go up to $829 for a WiFi + 3G 64GB version when it starts shipping on March 11.
Anything Else?
The iPad 2 also comes with an HDMI output cable, capable of 1080p, but the requisite dongle (Apple Digital AV Adapter) will set you back $39.
A new (fantastic) cover, which Steve Jobs described as "We designed the case right alongside the product. It's not a case -- it's a cover."
What that means, is it's a magnetic 'flap' that protects the front, automatically waking/sleeping the device when it's opened/closes, and also doubles up as a stand. It's better to see the bizzare creation, but it really is refreshing. The Smart Cover is available for $39 (plastic) or $69 (leather).
The iPad 2 will also ship running iOS 4.3 (which will be available also for iPad 1, the GSM iPhone 4, the iPhone 3GS and the third- and fourth-gen iPod touch when it's released on March 11)
