Tech Beever Rant: Anti-Video Games

Written By Tech-Beever on Sunday, 2 January 2011 | 10:08

As our world of Games became better, those other people, the anti-gaming kind, got stronger.
I am for one, still finding it so mind infuriating, that these people are still so blind and naive towards video games, that it genuinely makes me want to rip my own throat out (although then It'd be in the news "Beever rips own throat out- VIDEO GAMES TO BLAME").

We live in a world, where now entire families are able to participate when playing games; the Nintendo Wii has brought families together to play games (including Grandparents), and now the likes of Microsoft Kinect and Playstation Move are available, those family game nights will be so much stronger.
Yet, we still have to endure the likes of Julie Peasgood; a woman so mind numbingly ignorant, that I wish Video Games would corrupt me, so that I could stab her in the face (but again, no, we don't want headlines).
If you happened to see the Alan Titchmarsh Show, in which CVG Editor Tim Ingham defended video games, you'll know what I mean. According to Alan Tithead, you can't compare video games to violent movies, because movies have an adult rating. Which is a perfectly reasonable argument, if it wasn't for the 18+ Rated picture that sits in the corner of adult rated games. Do your homework Alan.

Secondly, it is not a proven fact that video game violence and 'real' violence are linked.  But, and it's a big but (like Julies) IF there was scientific fact that the two are linked, why do parents still buy 18+ Rated games for children, then complain?

Because games are an interactive medium, they are considered more engrossing than movies or even literature, which is simply not true. Sure, there are games with superb stories, and gripping suspense, but does the fact you control the character, make it any more or less engrossing than movies? No, it does not.
And these ignorant people always seem to forget the likes of Super Mario, littleBIGplanet, Singstar, Just Dance or the whole heap of Disney games that are available for younger gamers.

Violence is everywhere, be it movies, games, books, tv shows etc, there's no hiding away from it, but games get the raw end of the deal, because the people who frown upon them, know nothing about them.

I'll admit, there are controversal games; the Airport Scene in COD: Modern Warfare 2 for example. But you don't have to play that particular level, as you are made aware by censorship. Also, the game is made and rated for adults, so if you buy it for your child, that's your mistake.
But how can you slam video game violence, then praise, hand out awards to movies like; Hurt Locker, The Saw Series, Inglourious Bastards, Hostel, Any Quentin Tarentino movie etc.

Ignorant anti-video game people will never change. That is the sad, sad truth.

But know this, if I see Julia Peasgood in the street, I will strangle her with a joypad.
Then upload it to KinectShare.
