Now, I enjoyed every console I've ever owned;
Atari ST, Amiga, Sega Master System, Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo SNES, Nintendo Gameboy, Nintendo Gameboy Colour, Sega Saturn, Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64, Sega Dreamcast, Sony Playstation 2, Microsoft Xbox, Nintendo Gamecube, Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii, Playstation 3, all come to mind in terms of good (and bad) memories, but other than the current generation of consoles, I've brought none of them. My Grandad brought me nearly every console I ever had as a child, whilst I had my Xbox 360 and PSP from my fiancée, my Nintendo Wii from my sister, (I brought the PS3 myself!). So what does all this mean?
Well, I'm an adult now, with a mortgage, a fiancee, plans for our first child, so I can no longer spend money on lavish bits of tech without the age old question; "do I really need this?".
I have an iPhone 4, have since launch week, yet I wanted an iPad. My fiancee was going to buy me one for Christmas, but that question popped up (this time from her) "Why do you you need an iPad? You have an iPhone?"
My answer was "because it's bigger and awesome". Come Christmas, no iPad...
My point is, I now have to think about what tech I buy, for example, we're looking at a new laptop, so every time we pop into Tesco, we see Dell laptops "on offer". Gone are the days where I'd drool over an AlienWare laptop, and in their place, are Tesco offers. Now, don't get me wrong, some of the laptops are pretty good spec wise, and the price is quite reasonable, it's just, they're a bit cack. Plus the fact I have to actually convince myself I don't need something hurts my soul. That, and our current laptop is still working.
News of the PSP 2 (NGP) means I have to decide between that and the Nintendo 3DS. I've already chosen the PSP 2, but wait; I don't know how much it is.
The same of the next generation of iPhone- will I need it? iPad 2? Blackberry Playbook? Samsung TX100? The fact is... ah hell, I WANT THEM ALL!!
But alas, with the economy the way it is (everyone on their arse) it'll be a good while before we the consumer, will be able to splurge on tech without repercussions.
