T.B.I.Y- iPhone/iPod Charge & Speaker Dock [update]

Written By Tech-Beever on Wednesday, 6 April 2011 | 13:49

Over the next few weeks, work will start on the 'T.B.I.Y- iPhone/iPod Charge & Speaker Dock'.
Various plans have been made, blue prints and material selections, so all that needs to be finalised now, is to pick one of the designs, get the materials and begin!

One feature that I'll be putting on the product regardless, is the glass fascia, complete with LED Logo, which I'm going to try and pioneer on all the things I mash together. Now all I need is to design a logo...
Obviously, our resident mascot, Tech Beever, was the first choice, but ultimately, he's going to prove difficult, so off to the drawing board.

Even though it hasn't even been made yet, a successor to the T.B.I.Y- iPhone/iPod Charge & Speaker Dock has been dreamed up, so expect a smaller, slimmer and probably too awesome to be considered cool version over the next few months.

[UPDATE]

Well, as I said, the plan was to pick a design, then start picking materials, but I came up with another design, so that's another one to choose from (plus, writing this, I've thought of another to consider...). Material wise, I'm looking at three main types; plastic, wood and metal (as well as glass).

Now, I know 'wood' isn't the obvious choice for an iPhone Speaker dock, but I have a cunning plan...
Failing that, I'm on the lookout for some Thermoplastic, the type that your faithful TV remote is made of, yet not having much luck, so if anyone knows of anywhere, let me know here.

Logo wise, still got nothing. Considered using the old silhouette logo we used to have, but I'm not really loving the idea, so I'll be drawing hundreds up before the end of the week.

On the electronic's side, the part I needed for the actual docking part came today, and I'm totally pleased with it! Looks great, and should fit nicely. Now just need to find the right speakers to fix to the thing...
I'm still eyeing up various LED lights, but not really getting anywhere, so I'm thinking of just making my own circuit board and wiring up some small LED bulbs, but I'll keep looking.

I think I'll try making the glass fascia sometime this week, then find some speakers, as the fascia and speakers will determine the overall size of the dock.

Stay tuned for the next T.B.I.Y update!
