Machinarium Review (Android)

Does Amanita Design's whimsical point and click adventure deliver a game that plays as good as it looks?

[NOTE] Although it's available now on iOS and Android, it's only available to Duel-Core Android tablets and the New iPad and iPad 2.

Machinarium took the prize for "Excellence in Visual Art" back at the 2009 Independent Game Festival, and it is easy to see why. The game is stunning, like an interactive steam-punk graphic novel, bursting with hand drawn art that ripples with life and personality, Machinarium is certainly in a league of it's own when it comes to design.

On the gameplay side of things, it's a point-and-click adventure through-and-through, and fans of old school greats like Sam & Max and the Adventure of Monkey Island will be at home with the insane difficulty level. Yes, Machinarium will confuse and frustrate you to your very limits, but it's worth it to experience one of the most beautiful and endearing games I've ever played.

You command a cute little robot abruptly thrown out of his city with the trash. By pointing and clicking through the bleak steampunkish environment you can return him to his home, reunite him with his girlfriend, and even aid in preventing a terrorist attack.

Our robot buddy has the ability to stretch and scrunch his body, making for some interesting puzzle opportunities. There are is no dialogue in Machinarium (save for some odd sound effects) but when the robot encounters someone, a thought bubble will appear that shows the specific memory this individual conjures up. Despite the chilly atmosphere, these moments offer a wonderful sense of fanciful quality.

During the play through, I actually managed to get stuck on the second puzzle; it's that hard, but if you do need a hint (and you will), you can tap the light bulb in the corner of the screen and a thought bubble will appear above the robot indicating the ultimate goal for that particular room. It wont reveal how you actually solve the puzzle, but it helps.

However, if you truly need to be told, by clicking the small journal with a question mark, you can partake in a small 2-D shooter. By completing the brief mini-game, you'll be granted a detailed visual walkthrough of the scene you are currently in.

A flaw which did frustrate, was the robot and his walking. Once he's in motion you can't alter his course until he's reached his goal, making for a little too much downtime. It's not a big deal, but it does annoy.

All in all, Machinarium is a must-play for point-and-click fans. With it's gorgeous visuals, and, despite the lack of dialogue, the little robot is able to communicate more emotion to the player than most videogame characters. The music, with its subtle electronic soundscape that constantly shifts between making the player feel uneasy and calm is just outstanding, and goes hand in hand with the steam-punk style.

Judiciously and efficiently designed, with not a single pencil-drawn sprite out of place, Machinarium is a treasure that needs to be played to be believed, and if it wasn't for the few little niggles, Machinarium would have been the first App we scored a perfect 10, but as it is, it'll have to make do with one less.

Machinarium is an indie game project created and released by Amanita Design. A puzzle / adventure game, this game focuses on a little robot who's been thrown out to the scrap yard behind the city who must return and confront the Black Cap Brotherhood and save his robot-girl friend.

Blackberry World 2012 Keynote Highlights Roundup

Blackberry World 2012 Keynote Highlights Roundup

We've got everything from todays Blackberry World Keynote; from BlackBerry 10, along with RIM's new development device, cool new software features and even DJ'ing via the Playbook; it's all here in handy bitesize portions!

[UPDATE]
We've got videos of the Blackberry 10 Dev Alpha in action here!

BlackBerry App Generator Makes App Building a Breeze
Mippin, the app creation platform, has announced that it will power the BlackBerry App Generator, so users can turn their content (photos, music, info etc) into full-blown apps for BlackBerry smartphones and PlayBook tablets -- wait for it -- for free. Martyn Mallick, VP Global Alliances and Business Development at RIM noted, "With the launch of BlackBerry App Generator Mippin and RIM are tearing down the barriers and finding new ways to encourage content publishers to create apps."

Blackberries Will Now Have...Games?
It's no secret, Blackberries aren't known for their great apps. But that's all going to change, RIM's head of gaming, Anders Jeppsson, took to twitter to let the world know about the impressive pile of titles heading to the PlayBook and BlackBerry 10. Jetpack Joyride, from Halfbrick (the studio behind Fruit Ninja), and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 are scheduled, whilst others in the pipeline include Galaxy on Fire 2 and Star Marine, meanwhile Tomb Raider fans can get down with Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light starting today

BlackBerry 10 Camera 'Timeline Lens'
Thorsten Heins took to the stage to unveil the new BB10 camera app, Timeline Lens. Designed to capture those "magic moments" you may miss by not being quick enough on the shutter. If you miss it by a couple of seconds, you can cycle back through the camera's cache with a circular "timeline" lens and take your pick from the previous seconds worth of frames.

BlackBerry 10 Multitasking
A stunning feature of the new QNX-based OS is the multitasking. Instead of going the task list route, you simply swipe to reveal background tasks. Drag your thumb from left to right to peek at other apps that are currently running in the background. You can simply glance at them and go back to the foreground, or you can actually swipe back to go to programs launched earlier. It's incredibly intuitive, and a very promising look into what RIM have to offer.

BlackBerry 10 Gesture Keyboard
Most people (all people) will say that the best part of a Blackberry is the keyboard. The Storm, Storm II and Torch showed that Blackberries aren't the ideal touchscreen models, but it does seem RIM have found a way to bring the trusty keyboard experience to a touchscreen design. According to Thorsten Heins, the new keyboard has gesture support, as well as elements of predictive text, like many other keyboards. For example, to get to numbers and special characters, just swipe upward from below and the keyboard layout changes. You can swipe up and down to cycle through these layouts and, like SwiftKey, swipe left to delete whole words. It's not revolutionary, but it looks a stellar effort.

And Lastly...

The BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Device
Remember that pic we posted earlier? Well, here's a little more for you; The Dev Alpha boasts a 4.2-inch screen with a stunning resolution of 1280 x 768. We've learned that it houses 16GB internal storage and 1GB RAM. It also features a slot for microSD cards and a mini-HDMI port on the left side. On the top you'll see the 3.5mm headphone jack, power button and mic, while the right side offers a three-stage volume rocker. There's a front facing camera as well as a large bezel for gesture support on the front. And, well, that's it!
But here's a few shot's from Engadget.

Blackberry World 2012 Keynote Sneak Peek (video)

What's this? A sneak peek from the Blackberry World 2012 Keynote, that's what.

BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha Unit Unveiled

See that there? That's RIM's official dev unit for its just launched BlackBerry 10 platform, and it looks pretty darn good. There's no word on the main guts, but we do know it features a jaw-dropping 4.2-inch, 1280 x 768 display that bests the 720p panels found on other similarly-sized handsets, and also it's packing 16GB internal storage and 1GB of RAM.

But what's for sure, is that this could be the start of something special. I've spent the most part of today very, very impressed with what I've seen so far of RIM's QNX-based slab.

Want more? We'll have the highlights of RIM's Blackberry World Keynote later.

Asus Transformer Prime Tablet Gets UK Release Date

Taiwanese company Asus has given confirmation that the newest Eee Pad on the block is hitting good old Great Britain in January 2012. The 10.1” tablet/netbook hybrid is powered by the awesome Tegra 3 quad core processor, so blazing speeds are a given, and the Prime is expetionaly good looking too as well as incredibly slim; at about 586 grams, it is a good 100 grams lighter than the original Asus Eee Pad Transformer, and at 8.3 mm thick, it is almost a third slimmer than its predecessor (as well as being slimmer than both the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Apple iPad 2).

In addition to the power of the Tegra 3 processor, the Prime has a 12 core GPU and comes with Variable Symmetric Multiprocessing (vSMP), a 1GB RAM complements in-built storage of 32GB or 64GB, whilst an SD card slot is available to add further storage (up to 32GB).

The Prime comes toting Android Honeycomb (3.2), but Asus have stressed the Prime will be given an “over-the-air” upgrade to Android Ice cream Sandwich (4.0) soon after it is released.

So, what else is there? Well, you see that glorious 10.1-inch display? That's the Super IPS+ Gorilla Glass display and it delivers a resolution of 1280×800 pixels, offering a 178 degree viewing angle.
On the front and back of the device, are a front-facing 1.2 megapixel webcam for video chatting and an 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with auto-focus and LED flash, which can also record 1080P HD video.

But we knew all that before, what we're really stoked about, is that when the Prime hits UK stores next month, it comes at a very generous £499 (around $770 to all Americans reading) for the 32GB WiFI-only version -- but that's not all, it also comes packed with the keyboard dock (which itself is a good £100+), extremely good value.

App Review: Front Line Commando (iOS)

Developer Glu goes all in with this pint-sized shooter that packs a hefty punch.

Frontline Commando is basically a shooting gallery, you move left/right, duck, and shoot. And that's it.

But where it excels, is that it not only looks phenomenal, but it controls brilliantly. It's a very simple affair, use one side of the screen to aim, and the other to shoot, with various buttons appearing for med-kits, ducking to reload etc.

Amazingly, even though the game is the same formula throughout, each level manages to be somewhat creative, helping to bring the repetitive nature to a minimum.

I'll be honest, there's not much I can say, if you've played a shooting gallery before, you'll know exactly what it's all about. And whilst it's simple fun, it's also a very good looking game, aided with accurate and brilliant controls, and as it's free, there's no reason you shouldn't try it.

Spec wise, your'e looking at a 7-inch IPS panel, Gorilla Glass coating, a 1GHz TI OMAP dual-core CPU, 512MB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and a chassis that weighs 14.6 ounces. Sony S1 and S2 dual-screen Honeycomb tablets Officially Announced

Sony are holding a press event in Tokyo today, and has unveiled two, yes two Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablets.

The first is the 9.4-inch S1 tablet, which has a curved top much like a folded magazine along with both front- and rear-facing cameras. The S1 features a Tegra 2 SoC and customized "Quick and Smooth" touch panel UI with "Swift" web browser. A neat feature is that it can also be used as a remote control for Sony tv's and other kit via integrated infrared.

The second tablet is the dual-screen S2 clamshell with its pair of 5.5-inch 1,024 x 480 pixel displays, Tegra 2 SoC, and camera.
We expected the S2 to be extremely bulky, but looking at the photos and video from Engadget, aswel as the press shots, it's surprisingly slim.

Both the S1 and S2 are PlayStation Certified, support DLNA, and are WiFi and 3G/4G "compatible" according to Sony.
Hit the link below for a full heads up on the S1 and S2 along with more photos and video.
