Vita Updates Less Excessive Than PS3

President of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida has said that the Vita update process won't be as frustrating as it is on PlayStation 3 and PSP.

Speaking to Game Informer, Yoshida said that:  "It's very annoying when you only have one in your busy life to play a game, and when you to spend 30 minutes out of that one hour to update the hardware.

"So it's not necessarily the frequency of how we update, it's the intrusiveness of the current process we have on PS3 and PSP." While not going into specific plans for the Vita's update system, he stated that Sony is "very aware of the issues, and we'd like to address those issues on PS Vita."

Play Killzone 3 on Your Vita

Earlier this morning, friend of Podcast Beyond and President of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida gave a keynote to a large group of Tokyo Game Show attendees. Yoshida, along with a number of other Sony executives, spoke on the Vita and various Vita games in the wake of the official press event yesterday.

During the keynote, Yoshida demonstrated a live Remote Play session where PlayStation 3 content was played remotely on the PlayStation Vita. Besides two brief hitches during the gameplay session, Killzone 3 ran smoothly on Sony's upcoming handheld. The back touchscreen was used to supplement the Vita's lack of two additional trigger buttons. Touching the right side of the rear screen aimed down the weapon's sight, and touching the left side of the rear screen while moving caused Yoshida's character to sprint forward.

Yoshida also spent time discussing some of the Vita's other capabilities, including data sharing via cloud services with the PlayStation 3. ModNation Racers users, for example, can use content on the Vita previously created on the PlayStation 3 version.

This data compatibility also extends into cross-platform play. Yoshida presented an additional live gameplay session in which he played LittleBigPlanet 2 on a Vita while a fellow Sony representative played on the PlayStation 3 version. Together, the two cooperatively completed a King Kong-themed level which incorporated the Vita's touch functionality.

Playstation Vita: The New Look

TGS (Tokyo Games Show) has been in full swing this week, but the big news was that of Playstation Vita's release date -- Yep, Japanese gamers will start playing on December 17th although there's no word yet on North American or European release dates.

That's not all though, as the TGS Vita looks very altered compared to the E3 Vita...

They're subtle changes, but they're there

At E3 (top), the side was sloped. Not so at TGS (bottom).

Buttons went from bright to dark.

Again, bright to dark.

Infamous 2: Festival of Blood Announced

Gamescom Sony Quick News:

  • PlayStation 3 Price Drop
Sony announced that the PS3 will now retail for $249.99, 249.99 Euros and 24,980 Yen. This is effective immediately. Previously, the PS3 sold for $299.99.
Sony also announced the 320GB PS3 unit will drop from $349 to $299 and a limited edition inFAMOUS 2 bundle is now available at participating retailers across North America. The bundle costs $299 and includes a 320 GB PlayStation 3, a copy of inFAMOUS 2 and a 30-day membership to PlayStation Plus.

  • Vita RAM Won't Be Cut
Earlier this year, it was reported that Sony would be halving the amount of RAM in the PlayStation Vita from 512MBs to only 256MBs in order to cut down on production costs, which lead to increased concerns about the system's graphics performance. New specs released by Sony today debunk previous reports, confirming that the system's RAM will go untouched, as well as reveal the resolution of the system's built-in cameras.

  • A New PSP
Sony talked a whole bunch about the PlayStation Vita, and then announced a new PSP model. This one will be compatible with the entire PSP catalog but not have a Wi-Fi option. It'll cost 99 Euros. No word on an international release.

  • Being Social on the Vita
There was the traditional talk of Near (the app that lets you look at what people are playing around you and share gifts) , Party (text and voice chat) as well as Live Area (a place to track and comment on news), but Sony also confirmed Facebook, Twitter, FourSquare and Skype will work on the device. There's even a group PSN messaging system.

  • Ubisoft's Vita Games -- Assassin's Creed, Rayman, Lumines
Assassin's Creed, Rayman and more are coming the PlayStation Vita. Today at Gamescom, Ubisoft announced six titles for Sony's handheld. They include: Asphalt, Assassin's Creed, Dungeon Hunter Alliance, Lumines, Michael Jackson the Experience and Rayman Origins.

Assassin's Creed will arrive in 2012 with a brand new story featuring brand new characters.

"With its processing power, dual tactile screens and cameras, PS Vita allows creators like Ubisoft new and unique opportunities to develop innovative games," said Yves Guillemot, chief executive officer of Ubisoft. "We've got a strong and varied line-up that will offer fun and immersion to all audiences of the PS Vita."

Escape Plan: An experience tailor-made for Vita.

Escape Plan's strongest selling point (other than its stunning looks) is that you truly do get a game that's made with the Vita in mind, a title that couldn't be played on any other console or handheld, whether it be on Xbox, a 3DS, an iPad, or a PlayStation 3. That's not to say it 'couldn't' work, I suppose all that would change is the control scheme, but that's the key; lose the Vita control scheme, and you've lost part of the charm.

Escape Plan is a puzzle game where you must guide two characters -- the short and skinny Lil and the tall and fat Laarg (pronounced "large") -- through various rooms in strange environments, such as a factory, a prison, a garbage dump and a workshop. All done utilising Vita's front touchscreen and back touch pad, all to marvellous effect.

Check out the Gamescom trailer below, and we'll keep you updated on the intriguing Escape Plan.

E3 Highlights: Part 1

E3 2011 was phenomenal. No two ways about it. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo all proved that they're packing heat.

But what was so great about this years E3?

Without a doubt, the top of the list has to be Wii U.
Nintendo's successor to the Wii, the Wii U brings the casual and hardcore gamers together, with Nintys most accomplished console yet. A slim console that delivers high end HD graphics, that developers are already proclaiming they're on board to bring the likes of Batman, Darksiders II, Tekken, Dirt, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Ghost Recon Online, Assassin's Creed, Metro: Last Light, and Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge all apparently making the move to Wii U.

But it's the controller that's got everyone talking. Although it bears resemblance to the Dreamcast controller, it takes more of an 'iPad with buttons' approach, and the result is something special.

Other than acting as a touchscreen input, the controller can actually display your game, so if the missus wants to watch Emmerdale, you can carry on playing whilst she watches her soaps.

But Nintendo wasn't the only folks there, so here's our highlights (in no particular order) from E3 2011.

Playstation Vita

Although the PS Vita has kind of been around a while (known as the NGP) it was inevitable that it'd show it's face at E3. And show it did. We got to see the likes of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, littleBIGplanet shown to great effect. But a big highlight, was seeing the Vita-PS3 crossover demoed. A game called Ruin showed how you can start your game on Playstation 3, then continue almost instantly (bar an 8second load time) on the Vita, as shown in GamingTrend's video below.

It's a feature that is highly exciting, and better yet- we've been told the cloud saving system will be free. Just got to pay the £249+ for a PS Vita...

Kinect Star Wars (Xbox 360)

It was only a matter of time... Yeah right, we've wanted this since the original Wii was announced! Although we're not sure when we'll get our hands on it, Kinect Star Wars has us mighty excited!
See the embedded video below for Engadget and Joystick's hands on.

Uncharted 3 (ps3)

You may or may not know, but we here at Tech Beever are MASSIVE Uncharted fans. Especially myself and Dan. So much so we started The Uncharted Saviour League to boycott the upcoming movie (and guess what- it's not being made now!). But even we were surprised at just how good the E3 trailer was. Watch it. Just- watch it.

Halo 4 (Xbox 360)

I'll be perfectly honest, I saw this coming. But did it surprise me still? Kind of. But the fact we have so little info means, well, we've not much else to say.
Other than HOLY CRAP HALO 4!!!

Tomb Raider (Multiformat)

Lara's new adventure is shaping up to be her best yet, and if the E3 trailer was anything to go by, she's looking better than ever.

Hitman: Absolution (PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360)

This was a big surprise. After the 5 year old Blood Money, Agent 47 seemed to vanish from our consoles. But all is forgiven with Absolution. The trailer is amazingly well presented, and when we got to witness a brief game play demo, we were very impressed.

That just about wraps up our E3 Highlight's Part 1, stay tuned for part 2, where we'll have more of our favourite highlights from this years E3 event.

Drop your comments in below with your own highlights/lowlights.

Sony @ E3 2011

Sony's E3 conference, handled by Engadget

10:00PM One last PlayStation video to blow away whatever synapses remain -- in 3D, of course. The whole room is rumbling.

9:59PM And we're done!

9:59PM That's big money, but a lot of handheld for the price.

9:56PM The 3G model is $299.

9:56PM $249.99, 249 euros, or 24,980 yen

9:56PM WiFi-only model: $249

9:56PM NGP coming out this holiday season...

9:55PM Some Dynasty Warriors, what looks like Tenchu, another game that resembles Odin Sphere...

9:53PM PSVita sizzle roll, bits and pieces of upcoming games. So... anybody think NGP is a better name?

9:51PM We've got a lightning lasso, a force shield, and a black tornado of pain coming from Cole's fingertips. Poor Street Fighters.

9:50PM We're going to see the latest build running in real time.

9:49PM And Cole from Infamous will join the fighter's roster.

9:49PM The game was announced last year, but today, we're getting the latest details -- it's coming to PSVita!

9:48PM Yoshinori Ono is here from Japan to give us the news.

9:47PM Capcom's Street Fighter x Tekken -- a trailer.

9:46PM Looks like LBP is using the full ensemble of features... lots of touchscreen use, tapping the rear touchpad to pup out blocks for platforming... making personalized accessories by taking pics with the front-facing camera.

9:45PM LittleBigPlanet on PSVita.

9:44PM Sony's talking up cross-platform play between PS3 and PSVita, like Wipeout HD.

9:43PM Two minutes flat for a custom racetrack -- that's impressive.

9:42PM Adding trees, buildings, other details... and now he's racing through this brand-new track.

9:42PM At least, that's what it looks like -- the fingers press on the back of the NGP, and it looks like they're poking up through the terrain, forming mountains. Very cool.

9:41PM Using both touchscreen and the analog controls, he's adding features... and using multiple touchpoints on the back to add mountains, by pressing *through* the screen

9:40PM It's a "trace to the finish"! Cute.

9:40PM Our demonstrator is creating a racetrack on the NGP touchscreen just by drawing his finger on the screen.

9:39PM ModNation Racers for PS Vita, developed specifically for handheld.

9:38PM Much prettier graphics on PS3, the jaggies are gone, but it looks like the same resources for the most part.

9:38PM Not just a PSVita game, it's also on PS3 -- and you can stop playing on one machine and pick up the session where you left off. Continuous Client for the win!

9:37PM Social network integration at work here -- we're not questing through any old dungeon, but actually the lair of a rival player.

9:36PM His big brutish warrior is bashing on some goblins, trolls and the like, with the occasional special move thrown in to stun baddies or knock them off their feet.

9:35PM It's an action-RPG, looks a lot like a Diablo.

9:34PM Now we're getting a glimpse of Ruin, from Idleminds and Sony San Diego

9:33PM Taking down baddies with the M4 carbine... looks like it's a bit touchy due to the recoil. He's aiming at the assailants with the stick, firing off some shots, then repositioning the aim.

9:32PM For firefights, it's back to the dual-analog controls.

9:32PM Either tilt and press a button, use the touchscreen or switch between the two at will, to do a variety of maneuvers for climbing up and around.

9:31PM While climbing, you can tilt the PSVita in a direction to jump.

9:30PM Showing off some touchscreen melee combat -- you follow the quick-time event prompts by swiping in the appropriate direction, it looks like.

9:30PM We've seen plenty of this game already, of course, but this looks like a new environment.

9:28PM Uncharted: Golden Abyss for PSVita, from the dev team at Sony Bend.

9:27PM Scott Rohde's on stage to show it off.

9:27PM Then there's Near, a location-based system that shows you friends and "discoveries" around you.

9:26PM PSVita has a "party" mode for chat with friends using the system.

9:26PM Pricing and information for carriers for other territories will be announced soon, he says.

9:26PM And free WiFi hotspot access at AT&T locations, of course.

9:26PM "AT&T will be the exclusive carrier for PlayStation Vita in the United States."

9:25PM Partnership with AT&T.

9:25PM Both WiFi and 3G models, as we heard, for social networking and location-based gaming.

9:25PM Six-axis motion sensors, front and rear cameras, dual analog sticks, OLED touchscreen, rear touchpad... you know the drill.

9:24PM or PSVITA for short.

9:24PM PlayStation Vita.

9:24PM "So, I'm very proud to showcase for the first time in North America, the successor to the PlayStation Portable."

9:23PM Dual cameras, OLED screen, all specs we've heard before...

9:23PM But... he's introducing the NGP now.

9:23PM "We continue to have very high expectations for PSP in the years to come."

9:22PM You'll recall this is the program for certifying Android handsets and the like for PlayStation games.

9:22PM Kaz is out on stage, talking up PlayStation Suite.

9:22PM Sorry folks, some technical difficulties, we're back now.

9:17PM Star Trek, based on the movie reboot -- and you play as Kirk and Spock, it looks like. 2012. The models look very accurate, but it could use some polish.

9:16PM The new Star Trek game will have a peripheral shaped like a phaser -- it holds a Move controller inside.
