PlayStation 3 Review: Cars 2: The Video Game
![]() |
Disney and Avalanche Software surprised everyone with Toy Story 3 last year. They managed to make a movie tie-in a game that was, well, actually really good. With Cars 2: The Video Game, I'm glad to say they've done it again. |
Cars 2 takes a lot of inspiration from Mario Kart, and luckily, it's just as fun. There are power-ups and speed boosts and the like, but unlike Mario Kart's koopa shells and banana peels, you're dealing with machine guns and missile launchers.
Whereas the film focuses on Lightning McQueen as he travels around the globe to race in the World Grand Prix as some agents from Command Headquarters for Recon Operations & Motorized Espionage (C.H.R.O.M.E) are trying to get to the bottom of some evil plot, the game takes a more neutral approach to the story. Here you're taken behind the scenes to be trained as a C.H.R.O.M.E. agent by completing simulations of races and other driving tasks, and, well, that's really basically it.
Which is fine by me, as various modes have you hunting down enemies in an arena or playing team based capture the flag. It is truly fun and if you can look past the child-like liscense, you'll see that Cars 2 is essentially what it should be--a fun game--but what you might not expect, is that it's one that's hard to master.
There's a nice 'drop-in and drop-out' local multiplayer for up to four players. Even though the lack of an online mode is disappointing, it's just as much fun playing with friends the old fashioned way.
Graphics wise, Cars 2 is great little looker. Avalanche's close work with Pixar really shows, particularly the little details, like how the cars lift their tires to turn and move their entire bodies in expressions. The lack of a mini-map is a little odd, so you never know how far ahead/behind the opposition you are, which does make things frustrating, but you can see your car's face in the upper left corner, so even though you're staring at their backside most of the time, you never forget you're playing as a character from the film, which is a nice touch.
Overall
I found myself warming to Cars 2: The Video Game surprisingly quickly. It's a colourful little racer, that is extremely fun; but more so with friends, so the lack of an online mode lets it down. But other than that, look past the Disney liscence and you'll find yourself a fun, yet challenging little racer.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America, recently sat down with David M. Ewalt at Forbes to talk about the company's upcoming console.
Check out the full interview below.
David Ewalt: How do you explain the Wii U to people who haven’t had a chance to play with it?
Reggie Fils-Aime: What we are doing with Wii U is creating an ability for games to leverage two different screens; the big screen in your room, and the smaller handheld screen in front of you. By doing so it opens up all of these different experiences. The experience I use to describe it to someone is to imagine a first person shooter, where instead of constantly having to look at the screen, now I’ve got things happening all around me.
It’s a great experience. I don’t think it’s going to be a hard sell. I think that communicating to consumers through the magic of the second window, you can have a totally unique experience, with another player still in the room… I don’t think it’s a difficult sell.
The Wii and the Wii U are going to be on sale in stores at the same time. How will you market two consoles?
This is a device that will launch in 2012, after April 1st, so we will deal with that situation at the appropriate time. What I can tell you is when we launched the original Wii, there was an overlap with Gamecube. When we launched the original DS there was an overlap with the Gameboy Advance. I actually think maybe that one is more applicable, because Gameboy Advance was a tremendous, tremendous platform in its own right, and yet it sold side by side to the original DS, at least here in the US, for almost two full years.
So as long as the content is there, and as long as the way to differentiate the two is there, I think they can survive side by side for a period of time. Certainly we’re going to get to a point where [The Wii U] is the one standalone system, especially given all the backward compatibility.
You don’t think consumers will be confused by two Nintendo consoles on shelves?
They are different machines, and they’re going to have their own separate software. Even though the Wii software is backward compatible to Wii U, the branding will be a little bit different, the messaging will be a little bit different. I think we’ve had enough experiences separating out consoles in a transitional period to make that happen.
But isn’t your product line getting complicated? There’s a lot of different models of the DS handheld, and now two different Wii’s.
Well, first off, Wii U is an enlargement of our platform. If you look at our handheld space what I would tell you is we have a clearly differentiated line of products. We’ve got DS Lite, which I would argue is appealing to young kids as well as older consumers who play Brain Age and things of that nature… DSi and DSi XL users are playing that robust library of DS games, it really has a very broad footprint. And then we’ve got the 3DS, that right now is targeted toward that young adult gamer. So we think they’re differentiated enough. Certainly over time there’s going to be improvement to the product line. The way we do that is we let the consumer decide, and as we see some trends we’ll be preemptive and will look to improve product lines and move forward.
Nintendo's Wii U console and controller
We’ve made it clear: This is not a tablet, it’s not meant to be a tablet. But having said that, yes, it has a screen, yes, it has a range of input buttons, and yes, you’re going to be able to have a great console experience right in the palm of your hand.
But as we at Nintendo often do, we’re essentially creating a whole new type of game. It’s not handheld, it’s not a tablet, it’s a different type of experience. It’s an experience that most consumers have said, wow, I’d love to do that. I’d love to be able to have my home console gaming experience while my spouse is watching something else, whether that’s live sports, whether that’s some other entertainment option. Once it’s described, people are tremendously excited about it.
Can a user consume content other than games on the controller? Could I watch a TV show on it?
The messaging comes right from the console. So the programming would need to originate off the console.
So if I’m connected to Netflix on my Wii, I could watch Netflix on the controller?
Theoretically, that’s possible.
If the console is not turned on does the controller do anything?
No. It’s got to be powered through the console.
Microsoft’s message at E3 was all about Kinect, how there will be no controller, you are the controller. It seems like Nintendo’s at the polar opposite; you’re putting even more in the controller. Is this indicative of a basic philosophical difference between the two companies?
Well, all I can say is that this is not the first time that Nintendo and our competitors have had dramatically different views on the future of gaming. When we launched the original DS everyone was saying the handheld competitor coming from Sony has more powerful graphics, that’s really the way to go. And we showed that no, two screens, a touch screen, a microphone, that actually led to better gaming experiences. With the Wii, again, at the time our competitors were all about high resolution graphics. We said we think that a motion controlled experience could be more fun. Eighty six million units later around the world, I think people would say we got that one right as well.
In this case we’re saying that this two screen experience –either two screens playing the same game or two screens doing fundamentally different things– is the future.
How will the Wii U inter-operate with Nintendo’s handheld game devices?
All we’ve said to date is that we see the opportunity for cross-platform playing. We have one key developer with a very strong relationship to Nintendo, the same developer who created Smash Brothers, that is envisioning a Smash Brothers experience that will be cross platform between Wii U and 3DS. So we’re certainly thinking about it. What I would say is our experience will likely be very different than what our competitors are doing.
Your online services are very different than what your competitors offer. Isn’t something missing, that you can’t offer the sort of experience I can get on Xbox Live?
I don’t think it is an issue for us, and here’s why. We’ve seen what our competitors have done, and we’ve acknowledged that we need to do more online, starting with the launch of our eShop on Nintendo 3DS, and we’re going to continue to build our online capability. For Wii U, we’re going to take that one step further, and what we’re doing is creating a much more flexible system that will allow the best approaches by independent publishers to come to bear. So instead of a situation where a publisher has their own network and wants that to be the predominant platform, and having arguments with platform holders, we’re going to welcome that. We’re going to welcome that from the best and the brightest of the third party publishers.
Would it be reasonable to expect there might be a new or significantly upgraded online presence when the new console comes out?
We’ve said that the Wii U will have an extremely robust online experience. There will be other publishers talking about that as well, and from our perspective, we think it’s much more compelling for that information to come from the publishers than to come from us.
You were first on the 3D bandwagon with the 3DS, now Sony’s selling a 3D monitor, and 3D gaming is becoming more mainstream. Does 3D come to the console at some point?
In our view, what’s key to the 3D experience is that there be nothing between you and the machine. So for us, 3D gaming without glasses is a key part of the proposition. Right now the TV’s that offer that… I would argue they’re overpriced.. and a fairly small screen. There may come a time when 3D without glasses becomes appropriate for console, but we don’t see that in the near future.

Wii U Landing In April, May Stream Video

By now you've all probably heard of 'Project Cafe', Nintendo's next hitter in the console league.
Other than the ridiculous name, the Wii 2, as it's otherwise known, will be bringing some interesting specs to the table.
Apparently, it'll have the same power as an Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, and have full 1080p HD quality gaming.
But the most exciting rumour, is that the controller will feature an integrated 6" Touchscreen, that can also house as a display for gaming. So, theoretically, you could play your games, without a tv.
Now, we feel that to cram that much tech into a controller has got to be expensive, which will obviously effect the price of Project Cafe, which would be a bad move by Nintendo.
According to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, Ninty will "propose a new approach to home video game consoles" and that doesn't involve 3D. So could we see genuine innovation from the successor to the Wii? We'll find out at E3 June 7th

Obviously, he is infact talking about sales. But that's far from the truth. Sure, the price cut is great value, but the fact is, the Wii's motion controlled gaming are now miles behind that of Kinect and Playstation Move. The Wii may have more games as of present, but 2011 will see developers pouring their souls into the Xbox and PS3's new, far superior Motion Controlled gaming. They're both in HD, and whereas Move is, in all fairness; a better Wii, Kinect is leaps and bounds ahead in terms of inovation, an developers are going to want to get a piece of that action.
Tech Beever Rant: Exploding Wii's (Doctors say price cut is to blame)
According to EA CEO John Riccitiell feels a price cut would give the console a significant boost. After a drop in sales during 2010, the CEO quoted
"I would say they did exceptionally well in '07 and '08, started tapering in '09 and '10, and... I think if they were to price down to $99 (£63.92 to us Brits), they would explode,"
Explode? Really? Because that seems a very big claim to make. Is he suggesting that if you purchase a Wii after the suggested price cut, the console would explode?
I'm no sales expert, but I'd say exploding consoles aren't the way to go.

The Wii, rest it's soul, is dying. But look at it this way; Nintendo were facing a hard time. After the commercial failure of the N64 then the Gamecube, they were heading the same way as Sega (R.I.P). Considering the Wii is just a fancy, souped up Gamecube, Nintendo have done tremendously well with the Wii, and no doubt it's successor will double Nintendo's earnings of the Wii.
But then again, if it has a price cut...BOOM!!

Tech Beever's Games of 2010
2010 is almost over, but it's been a great year for gaming, so, here is a rundown of Tech Beever's Top Games of 2010!
Alan Wake- Xbox 360
Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Splinter Cell: Conviction- Xbox 360
Halo Reach- Xbox 360
Fallout: New Vegas- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Mafia 2- PS3, Xbox 360, PC
Red Dead Redemption- Xbox 360, PS3
Heavy Rain- PS3
Other games that really need mentioning:
After a long delay, Alan Wake finally came to Xbox this year, but was it worth the wait? A somewhat controversial title, means it sits firmly in the middle. It's by no means a bad game, far from it; an engrossing, beautifully presented game that genuinely makes you want to finish it, collect all the manuscript pieces. And that's where the problem lies, clocking in at around 14 hours, it's not a long game, and considering how long this was in production for, it really should've been better. But everything it does, it does well, and with the last lot of DLC now available, who knows what's in store for Mr Alan Wake.
The first Kane and Lynch was, well, pretty cack. The ideas were there, but the awkward controls and linear missions all made for nothing but a frustrating game. The sequel does fix that (the controls are still a tad clunky mind), and the new "Youtube" perspective is genuinely unique, and makes Dog Days a violent, funny and gripping game.
When Conviction was first announced, the idea that it would take a different direction to previous Splinter Cell games, made fans both excited and sceptical. The finished product, however, made everyone weep. It was brilliant. A new, older, more grizzly Sam Fisher meant that sneaking around in the dark was just for safety measures, because in Conviction; Take downs are just as important as stealth. A fine new direction from Ubisoft, meant that Conviction takes the Splinter Cell series to a new, exciting direction. And all the better for it.
The swan song on the worldwide loved Halo Franchise, is both glorious, and appalling all in one. The latter being that it's the last one.
Reach takes us back before the events of Combat Evolved, to the planet (you guessed it) Reach. A stunning environment and genius made AI, makes Reach a compelling and action packed First Person Shooter.
First and foremost, the second outing of Super Mario Galaxy, includes Yoshi. That itself earns the title in the Top Games of 2010. The other reasons being that the game is also awesome. Instantly playable, Nintendo has recaptured it's masterful control of the platform genre; lovingly crafted, brilliantly presented and a real joy to play. Alongside the ingenious ideas and well crafted music, Super Mario Galaxy is pure unadulterated fun.
Bethesda's Apocalyptic wasteland takes us to New Vegas; a place that was only "just" touched by the nuclear out pour. What this means, is that instead of the dreary wastelands of Fallout 3, you get 'not so dreary' wastelands, with various plant life and water that isn't highly radiated. The game itself is marvelous, well acted, with literally hundreds of missions you can take on, without even delving into the main story. When you actually reach New Vegas (you start a long way from it) it is filled with lights, casinos and busy folk, and after traveling the wastelands, it's something you crave. Although buggy, New Vegas is a wonderful game, that will keep you entertained for quite some time.
After the appalling Mafia game 8 years ago, many people wondered why a sequel was rearing it's gangster head. Those people, were fools.
Mafia 2 is, to put it simply, in GTA territory, a well made sandbox world, with fantastic cut scenes, and characters you genuinely care about. The longevity of the game is pretty short, even with the free DLC you get if you brought the PS3 version. But nonetheless, Mafia 2 is a fine game.
The wild west. Who would have thought it would pose as the setting for a game? Redemption is a sequel of sorts to Red Dead Revolver (Xbox, PS2). Players take on the role of James Marston as they battle their way through lucious outbacks, thriving cities and dangerous mountains, all in the name of revenge.
Many people will sumerise this as "GTA with horses", and their is some truth to that. However, there's so much more to Red Dead Redemption. Want to find out? Go buy it!
Heavy Rain- PS3WOW! That is one of the words we shouted when we first laid our eyes on Heavy Rain. Awesome! Quickly followed.
We could fill this entire summary with those types of words, for Heavy Rain really is groundbreaking achievement.
Made by Quantic Dream, known (or unknown) for their fantastic Fahrenheit (also known as Indigo Prophecy), Heavy Rain takes you on a dramatic and thrilling adventure, tracking down the mysterious Origami Killer.
The game plays out using four characters, who's story all entwines with one another. If you make a mistake, the story will take a different course, meaning you'll get a different outcome on every play. Amazing photo realistic graphics, fantastic acting, this really is the game of 2010
